the canon brand toner is expensive and hard to find. there are reconditioned toners for less than the canon brand. those usually work fine. highly recommend this unit if you need one.

I am a graphic designer and spent many hours evaluating my options before purchasing a new printer for my home/office use. It came down to a choice between a Canon Pixma MG6220 or an Epson Artisan 835. I needed decent print quality, a decent scanner, and ability to print directly onto printable CD/DVD's. Both options had all of these. The Canon seemed to offer slightly better print quality but many new users of this product reported much higher than normal ink usage and ink replacement costs. The Epson is not cheap as far as ink costs either, but based on my previous good experience with the 835's older sibling (an RX580) I decided on this one. I have not been disappointed.

The print quality is excellent, ink usage seems minimal for my small office purpose, and unlike the reviews I read regarding the Canon, the 835 does not constantly run its internal head-cleaning routine which means it uses less ink in the long run. Unless I send a print command to the 835 it just sits quietly in sleep mode and powers up fast when needed.

The only complaint I have is with Epson's scanner software. With my older Epson RX580 I could send all scans directly to Photoshop, but with this one, everything goes to Epson's scanner app called Image Capture. Image Capture works fine and has more scan options than the older scan software I had with the RX580, but if I want to take anything into Photoshop I now have to scan with Image Capture, drop the file on my desktop then open the file in PS (in short, it's now a two step process instead of a one step process.)

Other than the scanner software, I have nothing to complain about and much to praise regarding this printer. It's a good value for the money, very fast print speeds, and after my first month of use I still have lots of ink left in the original cartridges.
