Symantec was founded by Gary Hendrix in April 1982 after a spin-off from Machine Intelligence Corporation—a company built for researching artificial intelligence. In 1983, Symantec developed “The Wiz” and “Straight Talk,” its first programs. All throughout 1980s, Symantec produced programs that aim to help businesses in their day-to-day computation. Along with that, the company expanded leaps and bounds. However in 1989, it launched its first antivirus product, Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh. In 1990, Symantec became one of the largest software manufacturing companies in the world, after acquiring Peter Norton Computing, the division which would develop one of the most prolific programs. The launch of Microsoft Windows 95 in the market was also in conjunction with Symantec’s release of Norton Antivirus. Due to the success of Norton, Symantec gradually focused itself towards computer and network security. In 1997, the company opened Symantec Antivirus Research Center (SARC) in Santa Monica, California and gained recognition due to awards it has received.
